Chapter 8

“What did you say? I can barely hear you,” Hannah shouted into her phone. One finger was against the ear unoccupied by her phone as she struggled to make out what Tyler was saying. His voice cut out every few seconds. Wherever her best friend was, it had awful reception.

“Can you text me? I don’t understand what you’re trying to say,” Hannah said, slow and loud. She was frustrated. If Tyler had to interrupt her time with Molly, the least he could do was keep whatever he had to say short. It felt like they’d been on the phone forever and with nothing to show for it.

There were shuffling sounds on Tyler’s end before he came back on the line with noticeably better sound.

“How’s this? Better?” he asked, panting as if he were out of breath.

“Much better. What do you want? I’m sort of busy here,” she said as she sneaked glances at Molly standing nearby. The other woman was browsing the jewelry for sale at a vendor. Hannah watched as Molly brought a black necklace with beads closer to her face before putting it back on its display. Right at that moment Molly turned to her, and their eyes met.

Hannah’s first instinct was to look away, embarrassed at having been caught staring, but instead she held her ground and smiled. Molly returned the smile before it dimmed, and a worried expression took over her face. But Hannah had no time to wonder about the change, because Tyler’s words had caught up to her.

“You broke your what?” Hannah screeched, hoping she had misheard her friend.

“I said I think I broke my leg,” Tyler repeated—unfortunately. Hannah felt her heart beat faster and a sick feeling sink into her stomach.

“What happened? Are you okay? Have you called 911 yet?” The questions fell out of Hannah’s mouth as fast as her brain thought of them. She looked for somewhere to sit, and when she didn’t see anywhere suitable, she just plopped down on the ground. Her legs felt like jelly and she didn’t trust them to support her any longer.

“I’m not doing so good, when you consider the broken bones and all,” Tyler responded, his words—along with his sarcasm—now coming through the phone loud and clear.

“Don’t be a jerk, I’m trying to help you,” Hannah shot back. “Did you call 911?” she asked again.

“In what world could I afford an ambulance?” Tyler responded. “And that’s not me being a jerk, it’s me being truthful.” There was a few seconds’ pause, and Hannah thought the line had cut off again. Eventually Tyler’s voice came through, small and tearful. “Can you come help me? It hurts a lot.”

Hannah squeezed her eyes shut, partly to keep her own tears from falling and partly in frustration. There was no way she could say no to Tyler when he needed her, but she and Molly had finally seemed to be on the right track with their day out, and she really didn’t want to cut it short.
